Job: Program Director
Creative Arts Workshops for Kids (CAW) seeks a full-time, inspiring and experienced Program Director to plan and lead the organization's youth arts programs in Northern Manhattan (Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood) and work with its Executive Director to enhance and expand programs, increase outreach and build new community partnerships.
This self-motivated Program Director is responsible for the day-to-day oversight and administration of CAW's three core programs: After School Art Works (a semester-long apprenticeship program for middle school students with professional artists); Saturday Art Works (a half-day arts workshop and mentoring program for children 5-11); and Summer Art Works (a summer jobs program for at-risk teens who work with artists to create large-scale community art); which collectively serve more than 2,000 children and teens each year. The Program Director ensures the quality of programs through curriculum development, staff hiring and training, and on-going program evaluation. The Program Director also takes an active role in public relations and marketing, including the creation of promotional materials. The Program Director will closely work with the Executive Director in seeking new collaborative, programming and funding opportunities as CAW looks to strengthen and build its programs.
Responsibilities:
- Manage all aspects of CAW's three core programs.
- Assist in strategic planning/visioning for programs, based on CAW's mission and the needs of partners/sponsors, including the Department of Education
- Develop and document curricula in partnership with teaching artists and partner/sponsor organizations, including New York City schools
- Oversee all program logistics, including all administrative and budget functions, recruitment, hiring and management of teaching artists recruitment and retention of students, training and management of our volunteer corps of approximately 650 people annually (through NY Cares, corporate partners and individuals), and coordinating final showcases of students work to the broader community
- Manage and train CAW artists, professional guests and interns on 'best practices' in teaching to ensure teaching effectiveness
- Deepen CAW's relationships with school communities, NYC's Summer Youth Employment Program partners and other partner/sponsors, including meeting with staff and administration, managing program sites, educating liaisons on CAW programs and learning outcomes, and developing opportunities to expand programming into other strategic venues
- Oversee program evaluations, including developing critical tangible metrics for measuring CAW success with respect to student results, consistent teacher quality, positive community impact, achievement of partner goals and positive volunteer response.
Additional Qualifications:
- MA preferred in Education, Arts or related field
- Minimum 3-5 years working in schools or similar educational and/or artistic nonprofit setting
- Strong leadership and communication skills with demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, ability to be accountable and hold others accountable, and motivate staff and partners
- Ability to simultaneously and effectively manage a variety of conflicting tasks and priorities in leanly-staffed, fast-paced, and demanding creative nonprofit environment
- Excellent writing skills required and computer literacy a must
- Experience training and/or mentoring adults
- Bilingual in Spanish a plus
- Some fundraising experience a plus (grant writing, funder presentations)
